Should an employer insist on a dress code? This question can prove to be quite debatable, however, in this article perhaps we can put forward some reasons why an employer will require a compulsory dress code and why an employee should respect this.

 It is important, as an employee, to understand why your employer or potential employer implement's a dress code. The reasons can be many fold:

 

 A large multi-national company, for example, an airline. May insist on a dress code that requires all staff to wear a uniform or clothing of certain style and color that represents their company image.

 

Health & Safety:

 A manufacturing company, for example, may require a dress code that will protect an employee and their clothing from manufacturing processes.

 

An employee should not expect to be able to dress as they please, particularly if there is a dress code, for example, they may feel more comfortable working in baggies, however, one must consider one's employer and those around, both colleagues and clients. If one employee was allowed to come into work scruffy then all would follow suit and this would undermine the workplace.

 An employer should also respect the individual needs of employees when it comes to dress code design. The employer should take into consideration a number of things:

 

Job related - A dress code should be sensible and related to a company's purpose.

·        Employee age range- garments should be reasonably fashionable in relation to the work force's age range and sex.

·        Sex - The styling and color choices for both sexes.

·        Health & Safety - whether there has to be a range that offers protection to the employee say on the shop floor and a different design for office workers.

 

An employer is responsible for making all employees aware of their company dress code.
